A Day in My Life Discovering Portland Jamaica's Untouched Beauty at Great Huts

I’ve traveled across Jamaica before—from the vibrant streets of Kingston to the sun-drenched beaches of Montego Bay and Negril—but nothing prepared me for the raw, untouched beauty of Portland. This part of the island feels like a secret kept safe by time, where nature and culture blend seamlessly. Staying at Great Huts, an eco-resort perched on the cliffs of Boston Bay, transformed my vacation into a deeply personal journey. It wasn’t just about sightseeing or relaxation; it was about slowing down and truly experiencing Jamaica’s spirit.

This post shares my full day in Portland, guided by Great Huts’ official excursion offerings. From cascading waterfalls to serene beaches and thrilling river rafting, I’ll take you through the top adventures that make this region unforgettable for travelers seeking authentic experiences.

Morning: Waking Up to Nature’s Embrace at Great Huts

My day began with the gentle sounds of waves crashing below and birds singing in the trees. Great Huts offers unique accommodations—handcrafted wooden huts with open-air designs that invite the outdoors inside. Waking up here felt like being part of the landscape rather than just visiting it.

After a fresh, tropical breakfast on my private deck, I set out for my first adventure: Reach Falls. The resort’s guidebook promised a hidden gem, and it delivered. The drive through Portland’s lush hills was scenic, with winding roads flanked by dense forests and glimpses of the Caribbean Sea.

Midday: Exploring Reach Falls and Rio Grande Rafting

Reach Falls is a stunning waterfall tucked away in the jungle. The water is crystal clear and cool, perfect for a refreshing swim. I hiked along the river, feeling the mist on my skin and marveling at the natural pools formed by volcanic rocks. The falls are less crowded than other spots in Jamaica, which made the experience feel intimate and peaceful.

Next, I headed to the Rio Grande for a classic Jamaican rafting adventure. Floating down the river on a bamboo raft, guided by a local captain, was both relaxing and exhilarating. The river winds through dense forest, and I spotted birds and butterflies along the way. The captain shared stories about the area’s history and culture, adding depth to the ride.

Afternoon: Discovering Blue Lagoon and Frenchman’s Cove

After lunch, I visited the Blue Lagoon, a natural lagoon known for its striking blue waters and calm surface. Swimming here felt like floating in a giant natural pool. The lagoon’s depth and color come from a mix of freshwater springs and seawater, creating a unique environment.

From there, I made my way to Frenchman’s Cove, one of Portland’s most famous beaches. Unlike typical tourist spots, this beach combines a river and ocean meeting in a small cove surrounded by palm trees and cliffs. The soft sand and gentle waves made it ideal for relaxing and soaking up the sun.

Evening: Unwinding at Winnifred Beach and Great Huts

As the day wound down, I visited Winnifred Beach, a local favorite known for its friendly vibe and natural beauty. Unlike commercial resorts, this beach feels authentic, with local vendors selling fresh fruit and homemade snacks. I enjoyed a cold coconut water while watching the sun dip below the horizon.

Returning to Great Huts, I felt grateful for the slow pace and genuine connections I’d experienced. The resort’s commitment to sustainability and community made my stay feel meaningful. Sitting on my deck, listening to the ocean, I reflected on how Portland offers travelers a chance to connect with Jamaica beyond the usual tourist paths.

Tips for Travelers Visiting Portland and Great Huts

  • Book excursions through Great Huts: Their official guide ensures you experience authentic, well-organized adventures.

  • Pack light, breathable clothing: Portland’s climate is warm and humid, with plenty of opportunities for swimming and hiking.

  • Bring cash for local vendors: Many small beaches and markets don’t accept cards.

  • Respect nature and local culture: Portland is less commercialized, so tread lightly and engage respectfully.

  • Plan for slow travel: The pace here encourages you to relax and savor each moment.

Why Portland Stands Out Among Jamaica’s Resorts

Portland offers a different side of Jamaica. While other resorts focus on luxury and nightlife, Portland invites travelers to slow down and immerse themselves in nature and culture. Great Huts exemplifies this with eco-friendly lodging and curated excursions that highlight the region’s natural wonders and local traditions.

For anyone seeking a vacation that balances adventure, relaxation, and cultural connection, Portland and Great Huts provide an unmatched experience. This is a place where you don’t just visit Jamaica—you live it.
